About Me (she/her)
Teaching Philosophy
I am a dedicated Spanish Instructor with over 20 years of experience in teaching and academic study. My rich background in social justice organizing and extensive experience living in culturally diverse communities uniquely inform my approach to language instruction.
Born and raised in inner-city Chicago, my early immersion in vibrant immigrant communities fostered a deep appreciation for the Spanish language and Latin American culture. This exposure ignited a lifelong passion for teaching Spanish, which I enthusiastically share with students of all ages.
My teaching philosophy centers on inclusivity, respect, and fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment. Inspired by the work of Paulo Freire, I prioritize dialogue and collaboration in the classroom, creating a space where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, questions, and ideas in Spanish.
I am dedicated to decolonizing the classroom by challenging traditional power dynamics and promoting a curriculum that reflects diverse perspectives. I strive to empower students through critical consciousness, helping them recognize and challenge societal structures and cultural narratives.
By incorporating elements of curiosity and creativity into each lesson, I encourage students to explore and appreciate the beauty and nuances of the Spanish language. Whether guiding beginners through the basics or challenging advanced learners with academic Spanish, my goal is to inspire a love for language and culture that transcends the classroom.
Through these principles, I aim to not only teach Spanish but also foster critical thinking and a commitment to social justice, empowering students to become compassionate global citizens.
